Computer-Delivered Listening

Proven strategies to master the digital format.

⚠️ The 2-Minute Warning

Unlike the Paper-based test, you do NOT get 10 minutes to transfer answers at the end. You only get 2 minutes to check your work. Type your answers directly into the gaps as you listen.

Essential #1

Right-Click Highlighting

You can highlight text on the screen by selecting it and right-clicking. Use this during the reading time to mark keywords in the questions so your eyes know where to look.

Essential #2

Tab vs. Mouse

Don’t waste time clicking the next box. Use the “Tab” key on your keyboard to instantly jump to the next answer gap. This saves vital seconds during fast-paced sections.

Essential #3

The Scratch Pad

Even though it’s computer-based, you will be given a sheet of paper and a pencil. Use this for Map labeling or quick notes if you aren’t a fast typist.

Essential #4

Drag & Drop Accuracy

For matching questions, you must drag answers. Be careful! Ensure the item is fully “dropped” into the slot. If you release the mouse too early, it might snap back.

Essential #5

Volume Control

You have full control over your volume. There is a bar at the top right. Adjust this before the test starts to ensure the audio is crisp and loud enough for you.

Essential #6

Review Navigation

There is a review bar at the bottom of the screen. If you are unsure of an answer, click the question number at the bottom to flag it and return later if you have time.

πŸš€ Quick-Fire Tactics

βœ“
All Caps is Okay: You can type your answers in ALL CAPS (e.g., “GARDEN”) to avoid worrying about capitalization rules.
βœ“
Word Count Matters: The computer will not stop you from typing 4 words when the limit is “NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS”. You must count them yourself.
βœ“
Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V: Copy and Paste shortcuts work! If an answer appears in the text (like a long name), copy it to ensure perfect spelling.
βœ“
Predicting is Key: In the 30-40 seconds before audio starts, look at the gap. Is it a noun? A number? A date? Predict the type of answer.

🚫 The “Score Killers” (Mistakes to Avoid)

Trap #1: The Distractor

“I changed my mind…”

The speaker will often say an answer, and then immediately correct themselves. This is the #1 way students lose points.

Audio: “We will meet at 5 PM… oh wait, no, traffic is bad. Let’s make it 6 PM.”
Correct Answer: 6 PM
Wrong Answer: 5 PM
Trap #2: Silent Letters

Spelling Counts 100%

If you misspell a word by even one letter, your answer is marked wrong. Be careful with silent letters and double consonants.

Common Errors:
Enviroment ❌ → Environment βœ…
Goverment ❌ → Government βœ…
Febuary ❌ → February βœ…

⚠️ The “S” Factor

The most painful mistake is forgetting the plural ‘s’.

If the answer is “cats” and you write “cat”, you get ZERO points.
Listen carefully to the end of the word!

❌ Fatal Errors Checklist

βœ•
Don’t leave any blanks.
(Guess if you don’t know!)
βœ•
Don’t write more words than allowed.
(“No more than 2 words”)
βœ•
Don’t copy the example.
(The answer sheet starts at Q1)
βœ•
Don’t confuse letters/numbers.
(15 vs 50, A vs 8)
Pro Strategies

🧭 Signposting Language

These words act like road signs. They tell you exactly where the answer is hiding.

“HOWEVER / BUT” Warning! The speaker is about to change the previous answer. The real answer usually comes after this word.
“IN FACT / ACTUALLY” Emphasis. They are correcting a detail. Listen very closely to the number or name that follows.
“FINALLY / LASTLY” The End. You are on the last question of the section. If you are still looking at Q3, jump to Q10 immediately.
13 vs 30
14 vs 40

πŸ‘‚ The Stress Test

-Teen (13-19): The stress is on the END. (thir-TEEN). It sounds longer.

-Ty (30-90): The stress is on the START. (THIR-ty). It sounds shorter and sharper.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Map & Diagram Hacks

πŸ“

Start at the Arrow

Always find the “Entrance” or the “Start” arrow on the map first. Put your pencil (or mouse) there before the audio begins. The speaker will always start from there.

🧭

Orientation Words

Don’t just use “Left/Right”. Practice these:
“Across from…” (Opposite)
“Adjacent to…” (Next to)
“At the bend…” (Where the road turns)

πŸ”„

Follow the Hand

In a computer test, use your mouse cursor to physically trace the path as the speaker talks. Do not just listenβ€”move with them.

⏱️

Pre-Read Labels

Look at the things that are already labeled. The speaker will use these as reference points (e.g., “Pass the Library and turn left”).

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: If you miss an answer, LEAVE IT. If you panic and try to remember it, you will miss the next 3 answers. Sacrifice one to save the rest.
