Table Completion Mastery
Learn to navigate columns, rows, and categories to locate missing factual data fast.
The 8-Step Survival Strategy
Use your brief preparation time to read the headings, predict vocabulary, and prepare for tricky data points.
1. The Word Count Trap
Read the instructions carefully! The limit could be NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS, or ONLY ONE WORD. If you write more than the limit, you get a zero.
Don’t lose marks over silly mistakes. Always double-check the exact word limit!
2. Look at Column Headings
The column headings tell you exactly what type of information is missing. If the blank is under the “Venue” column, you are listening for a place or room name.
3. Answer Order
The answers will come in the exact same numerical order in the recording. They usually move horizontally across a row, then drop down to the next row.
Keep your pen on the current question number to avoid getting lost in the grid.
4. Predict the Answers
Look at the blank spaces and use the column headings to predict the word type. Answers in tables are usually factual: names, dates, times, and prices.
5. Synonyms & Paraphrasing
If the table has the words “Saturday and Sunday”, the audio will probably say “the weekend”. If the heading is “Price”, the audio will say “Cost”.
6. Problematic Vocabulary
Be highly prepared to accurately write down tricky data points: Times, Numbers, Prices, Dates, Addresses, and spelled-out Letters.
7. Watch Out for Distractors
Examiners will mention a fact, then correct it to test your attention. Listen for reversal words like but, however, wait, or no, sorry.
“The play starts at 7 p.m. No, sorry. The doors open at 7, but the curtain goes up at 7.30.” (Answer: 7.30)
8. Guess and Move On
Never leave a blank space. If you miss an answer, take a guess based on the column heading and move to the next question immediately.
10 Quick Strategy Challenges
Click to reveal how you should analyze these common Table Completion scenarios.
1. The column heading is “Time”. The audio says: “We’ll meet at a quarter past three.” How do you write this?
Write “3:15” or “3.15”. This counts as one number and is much safer than trying to spell out “quarter past three”.
2. The blank is under the “Event” column. You hear: “We are hosting an exhibition of modern art.” The limit is ONE WORD. Answer?
Answer: exhibition (or art). You must drop adjectives to fit the “one word” limit.
3. True or False: The audio will read the table vertically, going down column 1, then column 2.
False. The audio ALWAYS follows the question numbers (17, 18, 19). Tables are usually read horizontally across the rows.
4. Audio: “The usual price is £5.50. However, the special Monday screening is reduced to £4.50.” Answer?
Answer: 4.50. The speaker used the “usual price” as a distractor before giving the correct “special” price.
5. The column heading is “Venue”. The audio says “We moved it from Gallery 1 to Gallery 2.” What do you write?
Answer: Gallery 2. Be careful not to write the original, incorrect location.
6. The table shows: “Transport: Bus | Price: £___”. The audio says “The coach fare is three pounds.” What do you write?
Answer: 3 (or 3.00). Note the paraphrasing: “coach” was used instead of “bus”, and “fare” instead of “price”.
7. You miss Question 14 entirely, but the speaker mentions the keyword next to Question 15. What do you do?
Guess a logical answer for Q14 immediately and focus 100% of your attention on Q15. Never look backwards while the audio is playing!
8. The instruction says “NO MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER”. You write “15th May”. Is this marked correct?
Yes. “15th” is a number, and “May” is one word. However, “15 May” is safer.
9. The column heading is “Name”. The speaker says “It’s John Arnett. That’s A-R-N-E-T-T.” How should you format your answer?
You must write “Arnett” with a capital ‘A’. Proper nouns must be capitalized in IELTS. Writing in all caps (ARNETT) is highly recommended.
10. What is the most powerful tool you have to predict answers in a table completion task?
The Column Headings! They give away the exact category of the missing word before the audio even begins.
