Diagram & Flowchart Mastery

These visual questions are often the easiest to score high on—if you know the strategy.

⚙️ Diagram Labelling

You will be given a picture of an object, a machine, a structure, or a natural phenomenon. You must fill in the missing labels.

Examples: A beehive, a fire extinguisher, a solar heating system, or soil layers.

➡️ Flowchart Completion

Flowcharts show the steps of a process. They have a clear start and end, with arrows guiding you through several stages.

Examples: The stages of a training course, an application process, or an essay outline.

The 6-Step Survival Strategy

You will have a short time to prepare before the speakers begin talking. Use those precious seconds to do the following:

⚠️

1. The Word Count Trap

Read the instructions carefully! If it says NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, do not write four. If you write too many words, your answer is marked wrong—even if the information is correct.

Always check: Is it TWO WORDS or ONLY ONE WORD? Don’t lose marks to silly mistakes.
🔮

2. Predict the Answers

Look at the blank spaces and use logic. Are you looking for a noun, a verb, an adjective, or a measurement?

Example:
Q23: The water is ___ (Needs a Verb)
Q24: Depth of ___ (Needs a Number/Measurement)
Q25: Stored in the ___ (Needs a Noun)
🔄

3. Prepare for Paraphrasing

The speaker will rarely use the exact words written on your diagram. Scan the existing labels and think of synonyms before the audio starts.

If the diagram says “Examined”, listen for the speaker to say “Analysed”, “Studied”, or “Researched”.
🎣

4. Watch Out for Distractors

Examiners love to give you an answer, and then immediately take it away. Listen carefully for transition words that correct previous statements.

“It was expected to work at a depth of 1000 metres. However, results are actually coming from two kilometres down.”

(The answer is two kilometres).
🔢

5. Follow the Numbers

Do not let your eyes jump all over the diagram. The answers will always come in the same order in the recording as they are numbered on the page.

You will hear the answer for 23, then 24, then 25. If you hear the answer for 25, you have already missed 24!
✍️

6. Never Leave a Blank

If you miss an answer, do not panic and do not stop listening. Make an educated guess based on your predictions, write it down, and immediately move on to the next question.

You do not lose points for wrong answers in IELTS. A guess gives you a 1% chance; a blank space guarantees a 0.

10 Quick Strategy Challenges

Click to reveal how you should analyze these common diagram and flowchart scenarios.

1. The limit is “ONE WORD ONLY”. The audio says “a metal pipe”. You write…
Answer: pipe (Writing ‘metal pipe’ is two words and will be marked wrong!)
2. The flowchart blank says: “Step 2: ___ the data”. What word type do you need?
Answer: A verb (e.g., Analyze, Collect, Submit).
3. Audio: “We originally planned for 5 stages, but we expanded it to 8.” The answer is…
Answer: 8 (This is a classic ‘Distractor’ trap).
4. The diagram label says “Outer shell”. What synonym might the speaker use?
Answer: Exterior casing, outside layer, surface.
5. You hear the answer for Q16, but you haven’t answered Q15 yet. What do you do?
Answer: Guess Q15 immediately and focus completely on Q16. Don’t fall behind!
6. The blank says: “Maximum weight: ___ kg”. What are you listening for?
Answer: A number.
7. Audio: “The funding ends in March, although we expect it to run until May.” Answer?
Answer: May (Another ‘Distractor’ trap using ‘although’).
8. The limit is “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”. Audio: “A large blue container”. You write…
Answer: blue container (or large container). You must drop an adjective to fit the limit.
9. You are looking at a flowchart. What transition words should you listen for?
Answer: Firstly, subsequently, moving on to, finally, the next step is.
10. The speaker introduces the talk: “Today we will look at the robotic float project.” Why is this important?
Answer: It grounds your context. You now know the diagram is about machines and water/oceans.
