Form Completion Mastery
Master Section 1 by nailing dates, times, prices, spellings, and telephone numbers.
The 8-Step Survival Strategy
Forms are easy IF you know what vocabulary to expect. Use your preparation time to do the following:
1. The Word Count Trap
Read the instruction carefully! If it says NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, writing four words means you score zero, even if the information is correct.
Always check if it allows “A Number”. “15th of May” counts as a number and two words!
2. Look for a Title
If the form has a title (e.g., “Packham’s Shipping Agency”), it immediately gives you the context. You now know you are listening for boxes, weights, and transport methods.
3. Predict the Answers
Look at the blank space and guess the type of information required. Is it a surname? A postcode? A price? An item inside a box?
Answers like Names and Colleges are Proper Nouns. They must start with a Capital Letter! (e.g., ‘Smith’, not ‘smith’).
4. Problematic Vocabulary
Forms heavily test your ability to quickly write down Times, Numbers, Prices, Dates, Letters (Spelling), and Addresses. Prepare to hear speakers spell out strange names letter by letter!
5. Prepare for Paraphrasing
Scan the form for keywords next to the blanks. Remind yourself that you are looking for the same meaning, not the exact words.
If the form says “Container”, listen for “Box” or “Carton” in the audio.
6. Watch Out for Distractors
Examiners love giving you an answer and then taking it away. Listen carefully for reversal words like but, however, wait, or no, sorry.
“I’d like to order two. No, wait a minute. I’ll have three so I can give one to my mum.” (Answer is 3)
7. Follow the Answer Order
The answers will come in the exact same order in the recording as they are listed on your page. You will hear answer 1, then 2, then 3.
Do not let your eyes wander. Keep your pen pointing at the question you are waiting for.
8. Guess and Move On
Never leave a blank space. If you miss an answer, take an educated guess immediately. Do not stress about a missed answer or you will miss the next one too!
10 Quick Strategy Challenges
Click to reveal how you should analyze these common Form Completion scenarios.
1. The form asks for “Name: Mr. ___”. The audio says “My name is John Smith. That’s S-M-I-T-H.” How must you write it?
You must write “Smith” or “John Smith” with capital letters. If you write “smith”, you will lose the mark.
2. The form says: “Width: ___ cm”. The audio says “It is sixty centimeters wide.” What do you write?
Just write “60”. Do not write “60 cm” because the “cm” is already printed on the form.
3. The limit is “ONE WORD ONLY”. The audio says “a leather jacket”. You write…
Answer: jacket. (Writing ‘leather jacket’ is two words and will be marked wrong!)
4. Audio: “The total is £50, but with your discount it comes to £40.” The form says “Total Price: £___”.
Answer: 40. The speaker used the £50 original price as a distractor before giving the correct discounted price.
5. The form says: “Contents: Books, clothes, and ___”. What word type do you need?
A noun (e.g., toys, shoes, plates). Look for items in a list!
6. Audio: “I usually arrive at 9:00 AM, however, today I got here at 9:30 AM.” The form asks for “Arrival time today: ___”.
Answer: 9:30 AM. (“However” signals the distractor).
7. The form asks for “Postcode: ___”. The audio says “It’s C-B-2, 4-T-X.” How should you format this?
Answer: CB2 4TX. Always use capital letters for postcodes to ensure clarity for the examiner.
8. You are listening for Question 4, but you suddenly hear the answer for Question 5. What happened?
You missed Q4! Stop looking for it immediately. Guess an answer for Q4 and focus entirely on Q5.
9. The form says “Payment method: ___”. The audio says “I’ll pay with cash instead of my card.” Answer?
Answer: cash. (“Instead of” is a distractor phrase for ‘card’).
10. Is it a good strategy to write ALL your answers in block capital letters on the final answer sheet?
Yes! This is highly recommended in IELTS Listening. It prevents you from losing marks for forgetting to capitalize proper nouns (like names and cities).
