IELTS Reading Strategy

Speed, Vocabulary, and Logic.
⚡ The “17-20-23” Rule

Most students fail because they run out of time. Do not spend 20 minutes on every passage. Passage 1 is easier, so finish it faster to save time for Passage 3.

17 Mins for Passage 1
20 Mins for Passage 2
23 Mins for Passage 3

Skim, Don’t Read

You are not reading a novel. You are hunting for information. Read the Title, the Introduction, and the First Sentence of every paragraph first.

🔄

The Synonym Swap

The text will never use the same words as the question. If the question says “cheap”, scan the text for “inexpensive” or “affordable”.

⬇️

Order of Answers

Most questions (Gap Fill, T/F/NG, MCQ) come in order. If you find the answer to Q1 and Q3, the answer to Q2 is hidden between them.

🛑

The “Blocking” Trap

If you can’t find an answer in 1 minute, MOVE ON. A hard question is worth 1 point. An easy question is also worth 1 point. Don’t sacrifice easy points for hard ones.

Know the Difference

🦅 Skimming (The Overview)

Reading rapidly to get the general idea. You do this BEFORE reading the questions. Focus on headings and topic sentences.

🔍 Scanning (The Hunt)

Looking for a specific detail (a name, a date, a number). You do this AFTER reading the question. Your eyes move like a radar.

The Logic of “True / False / Not Given”
TRUE

The information is clearly present in the text, usually as a synonym or paraphrase.

Text: “He loves apples.”
Q: “He likes fruit.”

FALSE

The text says the opposite or contradicts the statement. You can prove it is wrong.

Text: “He loves apples.”
Q: “He hates apples.”

NOT GIVEN

The information is missing. The text doesn’t confirm OR deny it. You literally do not know.

Text: “He loves apples.”
Q: “He buys expensive apples.”

🎯 Final Tip: The “Key Word” Strategy

Underline keywords in the Question FIRST. Then go to the passage. Never read the passage without a purpose.

🚫 The “Unknown Word” Panic

Don’t Translate.

You will find words you do not know. This is normal. Even native speakers do not know every word in Academic Reading passages.

DO NOT STOP READING.
GUESS AND MOVE ON.

Use Context Clues
  • Look for Examples: Words like “such as,” “for instance,” or “like” explain the difficult word before them.
  • Look for Contrast: Words like “However,” “Unlike,” or “But” mean the word is the opposite of the previous sentence.
  • Positive or Negative? Does the sentence sound good or bad? (e.g., “The plan was detrimental to success.” -> Detrimental must be bad).

💻 Computer-Delivered Reading Hacks

The screen layout is different. Use it to your advantage.

🖥️

The Split Screen

Advantage: The text is on the Left, questions are on the Right. They move independently.
Strategy: Align the specific paragraph you are reading with the questions on the right. Keep them side-by-side physically.

🖍️

Highlight & Notes

Advantage: You can highlight text in yellow.
Strategy: Highlight Dates, Names (Capital letters), and Numbers immediately. They act as anchors for your eyes later.

📋

Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V

Advantage: Exact copying.
Strategy: For “Fill in the Blank” questions, double-click the word in the text, press Ctrl+C, then click the box and press Ctrl+V. No spelling errors possible!

Matching Headings Strategy

The “First & Last” Rule

Paragraphs in academic texts usually follow a structure. The Main Idea is almost always in the:

  1. First Sentence (The Topic Sentence)
  2. Last Sentence (The Summary/Transition)

Warning: If the first sentence is short or links to the previous paragraph, read the second sentence. That is likely the topic.

⚠️ 3 Fatal Reading Mistakes

1. Reading the whole text first.
You don’t have time. Read the title, sub-headings, and go straight to Question 1.
2. Leaving blanks.
There is no penalty for wrong answers. If you have 1 minute left, guess ‘C’ or ‘True’ for everything.
3. Answering from your own knowledge.
Even if you are an expert on the topic, if the text doesn’t say it, the answer is “Not Given”.
