India achieved a remarkable feat on Wednesday. They became only the fourth country in the world to land a spaceship on the moon! What’s even more impressive is that they are the first to do it in the lunar south pole region.
The Indian Space Research Organisation, also known as ISRO, launched this mission in the middle of July. The spaceship, called Chandrayaan-3, took a special and efficient path to get to the moon. It traveled for about forty days before finally landing at 8:34 a.m. ET.
This accomplishment now puts India in an elite group of nations. The only other countries to have successfully landed a spaceship on the moon are the United States, Russia, and China.
ISRO shared the exciting news by saying, “Chandrayaan-3 Mission: ‘India, I reached my destination, and you too!” They proudly announced that Chandrayaan-3 had landed softly on the moon.
Now, you might wonder, what’s a “soft landing”? Well, it means that the spaceship touched down on the moon gently and safely, without getting damaged. It’s a big deal because it shows that India’s space program is making great progress.
