Master the IELTS Process Diagram
A process diagram shows how something is manufactured (like bricks or chocolate) or how a natural cycle works (like the water cycle or the life cycle of a frog).
Key Strategies for Processes
🔄 Flow and Sequence
The most important thing is to describe the steps in the exact chronological order.
⚙️ The Passive Voice
If it’s a manufacturing process, use the present passive (e.g., “The clay is heated“).
🌿 Natural Cycles
If it’s a natural life cycle, use the active voice (e.g., “The eggs hatch into tadpoles”).
Essential Sequence Vocabulary
Beginning & Middle
- Start: To begin with, Initially, First of all.
- Middle: Following this, Subsequently, In the next stage, Once this is complete.
Simultaneous & End
- At the same time: Simultaneously, During this stage.
- End: Finally, In the final stage, The process concludes with.
The Standard 4-Paragraph Structure
1. Introduction
- Paraphrase the prompt (e.g., “The diagram illustrates the process of producing…”).
2. Overview
- State how many stages there are in total.
- Mention the first and the final step.
- Example: “Overall, there are six main stages, beginning with the collection of raw materials and ending with packaging.”
3. Detail Paragraph 1
- Describe the first half of the process in detail.
- Use sequencing words to connect the sentences smoothly.
4. Detail Paragraph 2
- Describe the second half of the process in detail, leading up to the final product.
Pro Tip: Use the Visual Clues
Don’t invent information, but DO use the labels provided in the diagram. If a machine has a thermometer on it showing 100°C, you must include that detail: “The mixture is then heated to 100 degrees Celsius.”
