The Basics of Task 1

Key Vocabulary for Line Graphs
Upward Trends 📈
- Verbs: increased, rose, climbed, surged, skyrocketed.
- Nouns: an increase, a rise, a growth, an upward trend.
Downward Trends 📉
- Verbs: decreased, fell, dropped, declined, plummeted.
- Nouns: a decrease, a fall, a drop, a downward trend.
Other Movements 〰️
- Fluctuations: fluctuated, varied, showed instability.
- Stability: remained steady, leveled off, stabilized, plateaued.
- Peaks: reached a peak, hit a high of.
The Standard 4-Paragraph Structure
1. Introduction
- Write 1 sentence only.
- Paraphrase the prompt (e.g., “The line graph illustrates…”).
- Include the timeframe (e.g., “between 2000 and 2020”).
2. Overview
- Write 2 sentences.
- Identify the most obvious overall trends from beginning to end.
- Do not include specific numbers or percentages here!
3. Detail Paragraph 1
- Group the data logically (e.g., the lines that went up).
- Compare the data using specific numbers and years.
4. Detail Paragraph 2
- Group the remaining data (e.g., the lines that went down or fluctuated).
- Compare using specific numbers and years.
Pro Tip: Use Adverbs and Adjectives
Don’t just say “sales increased.” Say “sales increased significantly” or “there was a gradual rise in sales.” This boosts your Lexical Resource score.
